Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Jubal's Trix is Dead

Hey Archive Voyagers. Well, it's been over four years that I've been making these things called "matrixes" or "Trix," and after doing a lot of thinking over the last two days, which has included 0.8 liters of top shelf gin, it seems my time with these things is really coming to a close.

The biggest reason is just the pure stress it adds to my life every time I make a new matrix. As you all probably know, these things are very tedious to make, and I become much more crabby (especially with my wife) when I am in the throes of matrix construction; and I lose a lot of sleep, which negatively affects my day job work life, which I am happy to say has seen better days as of late. So, my time is just much more limited as well.

Also, it seems the source pool is much drier these days. I feel like the 70's has been raped and pillaged by the matrixers, and there's really no more sonic water in the well. I don't want to just make 80's and 90's matrixes for the rest of my life, and I think it's important to keep the Trix series as diversified as it is.

Taking stock of what's been accomplished, there are currently 96 Trix, with some not yet having the covers (10/21/83 is not included). I think that's a good number to close out on. I mean, Dick's Picks had 36 volumes, and "36" rhymes with "Picks," so it would be nice to have "96 Trix," because that rhymes nicely too. But setting a number limit is nothing new and has not really been effective, as I told myself back in the day that Vol. 02 was going to be the last one - then Vols. 09, 16, 30, 40, 56, 57, 60, 62, 66, 69, 70, 72, 76, 80, etc., but that never stopped me.

So, I'm thinking the real cut-off point should be that I stop making matrixes once the
Hunter\'s Trix Facebook page reaches 1,000 Likes, because it's definitely not going to make it to 2,000 Likes, and I'm not going to agonize over never achieving that or trying to achieve that. So, to the relief of folk who don't really dig these things being made in the first place - like Cliff Hucker and dark.starz, who have made some good points about them that have damn-near convinced me as well - I will stop making matrixes once the HT page reaches 1,000 Likes. I just need some specific level of accomplishment for me to go out on a good note. So, if I need to make 100 matrixes to reach 1000 likes, that definitely seems like the right goal to set.

Sorry for the long ramble, but it helps to share my thoughts with the GD community so I can better set a course of action to cut loose the "burden" of matrixing and let other folk have at it, because I honestly feel it has reached the limit for me.

So, please Like the HT Facebook page soon and set things in their proper place.

Please, make the link below the last Trix, which seems right as the last matrix of the HT/JT series:

MSG 10/14/94

All I can add is a very heartfelt thanks for all you have done. After listeneing to the latest matrix of 10/14/94 I think that should be sent over to vault keeper David at GDP for a Dave's picks release.Everything came out just perfect, mainly the crowd 'lovefest' at the end of the "Scarlet>Fire".What a job Hunter!!!!!!
But again thanks for the work,I seem to pull out a matrix of yours whenever I want to turn somebody on to a show they haven't heard yet.

just wanted to add my thanks to those above.

Like the Almond Joy candy bar commercial goes ("sometimes you feel like a nut...sometimes you don't") sometimes I like to listen to a soundboard...sometimes a matrix.

Completely understand why you've come to this decision, but just something for you to consider--instead of going cold turkey & stopping completely, how about, as a gift to the overall Deadhead community, making us one matrix a year & posting it to LMA every August 1st or August 9th?

Whatever you decide, again, much thanks & fare thee well.

I appreciate all the work you've done over the years, thank you! Micah's got the right idea though. Family should always come first, so you've likely made a wise decision. Good luck to you. It'd be nice to see you around the forums still.

you must have made a typo, I believe you mean 10-01-1994 and not 10-14-1994 that has that horribly rambling FOTM...

I used to hold that FOTM in high regard, but then some years and more listens equaled me being unable to stand it at all. 7-20-94 2nd, is a listenable '94 (beginning w/ Corinna).

I'm only a happy listener to many of your matrix shows, but somehow, I can't shake the feeling that the date of your post (April 1) is related.... ;-)

Since I seriously was pranked this morning (when I awoke both grandmothers were here and we had an immediate family meeting @ 10am regarding my wife's pregnancy: which do to snippage years back on me, I thought this an impossibility), I do hope I have not been taken twice. The first one was well done, with long, serious faces and tears thrown in. I am Mr. Gullible, so if I'm taken twice this time I'll have company at least.

btw- A few of those tears were mine this morning as I thought, my kids will be over 18 when I am 52. I saw my 60's disappearing into yet another adolescence. Then getting up at night. Baby proofing the house. My antiques in storage another fifteen years. And they thought this was funny. Tears streaming down their faces.

Wow, looks like the page just made it to 1,000 Likes - thank you!!! It appears the 1,000th Like was from Kentucky - nice! That's It, everybody! Thanks so much for your support over the years, which is a major reason why I was able to get as many hours of matrixing done that I could. I really do love the matrix sound. I feel like I've connected more deeply with the music and the spirit of the Grateful Dead by listening to shows in this format, hearing the band and audience relationship, and the way each show carries a unique energy as the result of the taper's and the band's combined efforts. Truly, the band/taper relationship was something very special in the GD realm - a real musical phenomenon! - and unlike any other rock band experience, so it has been a real privilege to work with all these amazing sources and meet so many nice people online to help direct me on an amazing sonic journey. So, thank you for a real good time, everybody!

JHS

I liked you last night, and I am in Lexington, KY. I had hoped to be the thousandth, but it appears I probably wasn't. I just wanted you to know that I rarely post, but I have really enjoyed your matrixes for many years.

Hunter,

I've always been professional and demonstrated respect in my limited dialogue with you, it's nothing personal.

What can I say, I’m old school and come from the viewpoint of a "straight wire with gain", that less is more in terms of linearity. It simply all boils down to personal taste.

Several of my friends feel the first duty of a wine is to be red. I don't drink red wine, the tannins make me feel like shit the next day and I have absolutely no problem if that's anyone's preference.

:-)

"I've always been professional and demonstrated respect in my limited dialogue with you, it's nothing personal."

Professional? What, pray tell, is your profession, if you don't mind me asking, and how the hell has it manifested itself in your dialogue with The Artist Formerly Known as Hunter Seamons?

Oh it is not. The 1000th like was from Kathmandu. What did you do, Jubal Hunter, fix it on 999 for April 1, so everyone could be Number 1,000? Clever.

Of course, I wouldn't "like" it to make you stop making matrixes. But you do nice work, I like matrixes just fine when I'm in the mood for artistically placed howls :-) , and I'm happy to participate in what seems to be an archives April Fools tradition, wherein the resident matrix maker calls it quits in a huff over his FB page ...

http://archive.org/post/354583/about-889000-people-have-liked-i-never-knew-the-gd-community-could-be-so-ungrateful

Ah tradition!

Btw I see Dark.Starz has started his own April Fool's thread, too, wherein he promises to deliver all those alleged tapes. You should really revise your promise, collaborate via FB, and make your Very Last Matrix a matrix of a Dark.Starz tape .... :-)

There are a number of matrixed shows that are among my favorites. When the sbd is too flat and the aud isn't full enough you've come through and brought to life shows that I otherwise passed over. Thanks very much for all of your efforts, and thank your wife too.

Well, only you can make a decision like this one, so I'll say nothing but -- thanks. A number of your matrixes have taken up permanent residence on my iPod and I'm sure that there are many many other people who feel a similar debt of gratitude. Good luck with the on-going balancing act.

Good for you, man! Your work has always been appreciated, but I can see why you'd want to be done with it when it takes so much time.

Thanks for all the stuff you've done over the years, I really enjoy it.

I should also mention that this last matrix stint has produced an unusual case of Carpal tunnel syndrome in my right hand, and my middle finger has been especially numb for over a week. I've tried propping my elbow up on a pillow, but this damn tingling in my fingers will NOT go away.......

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Try no more than 200 mg per day B6 for carpal tunnel, my friend.

Thanks for all the selfless service to our community man!
